Metformin is mostly known as a treatment for diabetes. But with anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects in preclinical studies, there's been interest in its potential efficacy as a treatment for knee osteoarthritis.
A recent meta-analyses of the 5 randomized trials on the topic explored its efficacy and found:
Lower pain scores.
Improved physical function.
Better quality of life.
Regardless of mode of administration or treatment duration.
Treatment effects were greater when it was combined with NSAIDs.
This study provides high-quality insights into the value of metformin for OA populations.
